New York rallied early in the session on the back of strong gains in London, but the market swiftly reversed course once the buying momentum in the $1,725-1,730 range basis December. The contract tumbled $63 from its intraday high, sinking to $1,667 before recovering slightly. Prices idled in negative territory until the last few minutes of the session, when a renewed bout of speculative selling pushed the market back toward the lows. "The specs overbought it, and now they're selling it back," said one trader. But solid commercial-linked buying offered support at the lows, noting that a triple bottom had formed on the charts at $1,674-1,675. "There was good scale-down buying from the industry as insurance against any potential problems in West Africa," the trader added. December ended at $1,674 a tonne, ranging from $1,667 to $1,730. March 1998 futures yielded $38, to close at $1,702, while spot September slid $36 to $1,655. An estimated 10,430 lots changed hands on the day. Fresh fundamentals were scarce, but traders said uncertainty over potential crop damage from the El Nino weather pattern continued to underpin prices. Technically, December's next downside objective was pegged at $1,625-1,620, while resistance should emerge at today's high of $1,730. 081226 MET sep 97
