"Prices are moving up, but most people would rather wait until the morning before doing too much," said one trader. "What we are seeing is a typical Chicago weather market and no one will get too excited over here yet," said another trader. Chicago soy futures surged on forecast of a possible frost in part of the U.S. midwest on Sunday or Monday. Palm oil continued to rise on the back of Monday's data from PORLA and SGS with the weakness of the ringgit adding to the upwards pressure. Traders said there was also the possibility of more business from India's State Trading Corporation (STC) in the coming weeks. Reports coming from Chicago that palm oil prices were rising as a result of El Nino where dismissed by traders in Europe. "Palm oil is up because the ringgit is weak and we have had some bullish data this week - it has got nothing to do with El Nino. It could effect the market at some point, but not today or tomorrow," said one trader. At the close of business Dutch soy oil was 1.25 to 1.50 guilders up after Oct traded at 109.50 and Nov/Jan 107.75 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil closed 1.50 to 2.50 guilders higher after Nov/Jan fetched 108.50 and 109, Feb/Apr 108 and Feb/Jul 107.75 guilders a 100 kilos. Palm oil closed $2.50 higher across the board with no further business reported. Coconut oil closed unchanged to $2.50 down with no business reported during the afternoon. Palmkernel oil was $12.50 to $7.50 higher on a neglected market. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 171028 MET sep 97
