Malaysian palm oil futures fell sharply as the ringgit bounced back against the dollar. "The recovery of the ringgit is very much a local matter and has little effect on the international market, where steady demand for palm olein is supporting prices," said one trader. Other traders said although currency has been an important factor new features are now beginning to overshadow it. "Since Indonesia altered its export tax structure exports of olein have been increasing and sooner or later this will hurt Malaysia," said one trader. Traders said this was beginning to show in Malaysian exports. "In Ivan Wong's latest report shows exports remain over the magic 600,000 tonnes but aggressive selling by Indonesia will start to eat into the Malaysian market," said another trader. In his latest report the Malaysian private forecaster put August output at 853,000 tonnes, up 2.4 percent over July and stocks at 870,000 tonnes against 769,275 at end-July. Exports were projected at 650,000 tonnes during August against 715,906 tonnes in July. European trader said the Wong report appeared to be slightly bearish, but so far has had little impact. Soft oils dipped towards the close as the Dutch guilder regained some ground lost to the dollar and Chicago futures turn easier. Traders said the market had been thin all week and were hoping for a better start on Monday. "The market never really got going after the holiday on Monday in Malaysia and the U.S. and understandably our friends in the UK have been quiet this week," said one Dutch trader. At the close of business crude palm oil cif Europe was $2.50 up while products were $2.50 to $5 higher. No further trade was reported but traders said most of the business this the morning had been spreading between crude palm oil and olein. Coconut oil closed $2.50 down while palmkernel oil was unchanged in tradeless markets. Soft oils finished with soy oil one guilder down and rape oil 1.25 to one guilders lower.
