Spurred by Wednesday's technically strong finish, the market rallied at the open in a new bout of chart-driven buying. December quickly sailed through resistance at $1,702, a recent high set early last week. But producing countries stepped up their selling into the rally, prompting a midday retreat back below unchanged. Buying interest resurfaced ahead of the close, nudging December back above the widely-watched $1,702 mark. "Technically, the market looked very good on the opening, but there did appear to be more hedging by Ivory Coast," said one trader. Benchmark December rose $12 a tonne to $1,703, trading from $1,684 to $1,720. March rose $13 to $1,731, and the outer months were up $12 to $14. A report from trade house ED & F Man that reiterated its forecast for a large global supply deficit for the coming crop year may have added to today's bullish momentum, but traders said the shortfall had already been factored in to the market. The Man report said El Nino, a freak weather phenomenon, could damage cocoa crops in a number of key producing areas and double the world's projected supply shortfall, to up to 400,000 tonnes. Market participants were also keeping close tabs on rainfall levels in top-grower Ivory Coast, where crops were at risk after an unusually dry summer. Reports of scattered showers throughout the country overnight contributed to today's trade selling at the highs, dealers said. On the charts, traders said the market's positive tone hinged on its ability to hold above $1,700. Trade selling was expected to be strong at the $1,720 level, with stiff resistance at $1,730. The day's volume amounted to 9,220 lots.
