The Philippine peso hit a new low of 34.02 to the dollar on Thursday triggering origin selling of coconut oil on the fob market which in turn dragged cif Europe prices lower, But prices later recovered on buying interest from the U.S. "Origin selling on the fob market pulled the cif market lower, but it later recovered and at the moment I can't see a top to it because people are trying to cover for the early part of next year," said one trader. By the close of business coconut oil cif Europe was offered $2.50 down to $5 up after Nov/Dec traded at $607.50 and $612.50, Dec/Jan at $620, $617.50 and $615 and Jan/Feb at $630 a tonne cif. Soft oils closed higher mainly on currency factors with Dutch soy oil 1.75 to 1.50 guilders up and rape oil 0.75 to 1.50 guilders higher. Oct soy oil traded at 111.50 guilders, while 110, 110.75, 111 and 111.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill was paid for Nov/Dec. In rape oil Oct traded at 111.00, Nov/Jan at 111, 111.50 and 111.75 and Feb/Apr at 110, 110.50, 110.75 and 111 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Traders said despite the active trading the market was thin and there did not appear to be much volume behind the business. Palm oil was quiet with prices little changed at the close of business. "We need a period of consolidation after the recent rise in prices and must people are now waiting for the export figure for 1-20 September and Ivan Wong's report," said one trader. At the close crude palm oil cif Europe was $2.50 up after Oct traded at $520, Dec at $525 and Jan/Mar at $525 a tonne cif. Products were $2.50 down to unchanged with no further business reported.
