Traders said there were no new fundamental developments behind today's blistering rally, which saw the benchmark December contract rise as much as $91 from its early floor of $1,611. Instead, favorable technical signals drew commodity fund buyers back into the market after several days on the sidelines, dealers said. Steady trade-house buying was noted at the lows this morning, helping to push the market through the previous day's highs, where widespread buy stops were activated. "The industry was a very good buyer at the lows, and the speculators and funds were buying as the market moved higher," a trader said. "Technically, the market looks extremely good." December settled $48 a tonne higher on the day at $1,699, after trading from $1,611 to $1,702. Second-position March rose $50, to $1,732, while the outer months rose $48. Turnover was heavy at an estimated 15,062 lots. While concern about the potential effects of the volatile El Nino weather pattern, along with uncertainty over the size of the upcoming cocoa crop in West Africa, have underpinned the cooca market in recent months, analysts said there has been no change in the fundamental outlook over the past few days. "There isn't even weather to speak of" in West Africa, said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "The market just looks like it wants to go higher no matter what the underlying fundamentals are." Following today's steep climb, December faced resistance at $1,730, and then at the contract high of $1,777 set in early July. 171029 MET sep 97
