A drop in the British pound against the dollar, coupled with leftover speculative liquidation from Friday's selloff, drove prices down sharply at the opening. But the slide was quickly met with short-covering and new buying from speculators and the trade, which helped the market to rebound and avert a test of crucial support at $1,625-1,620. "The selling came off of a technical breakdown on Friday, but you saw some short-covering from people who had gotten too bearish too quickly," a trader said. Benchmark December futures fell $12 a tonne on the day, to close at $1,662, near the top of the day's $1,662-1,631 range. March 1998 delivery eased $10, to $1,692, off its low of $1,660. An estimated 8,134 lots were exchanged on the day. Meanwhile, traders showed little immediate reaction to the latest round of crop forecasts. In London earlier Monday, Ivorian Commodities Minister Guy-Alain Gauze said the country's total 1997/98 harvest would likely come in around 900,000-950,000 tonnes. The forecast, he said, was based on expectations that the El Nino weather pattern would cause a drought that would in turn reduce the upcoming crop by 100,000 tonnes. Some traders said Gauze's estimate, which was about 100,000 tonnes below forecasts put forth by local analysts in Ivory Coast on Monday, would help underpin prices. But they cautioned that the size of the Ivorian crop would depend in large part on weather developments over the next month. "So much hinges on the next few weeks as far as weather in the Ivory Coast, and then on the weather in Asia and elsewhere," the trader said. Technically, December would face stiff resistance at today's high of $1,665, followed by $1,675. Major support was seen at $1,600. 091037 MET sep 97
