The market moved broadly higher shortly after the opening on a wave of buying by day traders. Prices held toward the highs for most of the session, but the rally fizzled ahead of close as locals liquidated their longs. "There was a good range today, but the volume was pretty lousy," said one broker. "Light buy stops were touched off, but there was no follow-through from speculators and funds, which forced the locals out." December futures rose $3 a tonne on the day, to $1,665, after posting trades between $1,655 and $1,688. March delivery gained $3, to close at $1,695. Turnover was light, at an estimated 5,259 lots. With so much uncertainty surrounding the development of new crops in West Africa and southeast Asia, traders said many operators appeared reluctant to take positions in the market this week. A statement made by Ivory Coast's commodities minister in London on Monday predicting that a drought linked to El Nino would cut the 1997/98 harvest by some 100,000 tonnes could lend the market support in the near term, dealers said, but many said they were awaiting confirmation of the estimate from independent forecasters. "I think the tone right now is wait and watch," the trader said. 101109 MET sep 97
