The benchmark December contract fell $31 a tonne on the day, to $1,668, having recovered from its intraday low of $1,656. March 1998 delivery fell $30, to $1,702, while the remaining months slid $26 to $27. Both speculators and the trade joined in the selling, which dealers said was partially a technical move to consolidate Tuesday's sharp gains. But industry traders also cited talk that a leading crop forecaster had isssued a fairly positive outlook for the Ivory Coast's upcoming cocoa harvest. According to trade sources, crop analyst Hans Kilian said in a report to private clients that cocoa pods had come through a relatively dry summer without suffering much damamge. Some traders said he also predicted the main Ivorian crop would reach 915,000 tonnes, largely in line with market expectations. Kilian declined to comment on the report. "There was some selling off the back of fairly good prospects out of West Africa, even though the rest of the cocoa-growing world is starting to see the effects of El Nino," said one trader. Technically, December briefly slipped below support at $1,660, before recovering by the close. Traders said sell stops were well-placed below the $1,660-1,655 area. To the upside, major resistance awaited at $1,730, a high from early September. An estimated 8,636 lots changed hands on the day. 181040 MET sep 97
