Benchmark March futures gained $14 to close at $1,552, after trading from $1,534 to $1,557. The back months all closed $13 higher. The market once again failed to crack the closely watched $1,559 level overhead, with the March contract faltering just beneath that level in each of the last five sessions. Meanwhile, the Chocolate Manufacturers Association said Friday that U.S. cocoa grindings for the fourth quarter rose by 4.09 percent compared with the same period a year earlier, to 99,253 tonnes. The results, which largely conformed to traders' projections, had little impact on prices. "The figure was in harmony with expectations," said Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson. "Strong West African statistics have been overruling the grind." The amount of chocolate liquor melted climbed 64 percent to 2,551 tonnes, while the quantity of cocoa butter melted fell 11 percent to 13,889 tonnes, the CMA said. An estimated 6,674 lots changed hands on the day. The CSCE will be closed on Monday, January 19, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. 191035 MET jan 98
