Bellwether March futures fell $23 a tonne on the day to close at $1,542, its weakest close since last August. Second-position May fell $20 to $1,577. A steady flow of cocoa arrivals at port in West Africa, especially in No. 2 producer Ghana, was keeping pressure on cocoa prices, said Arthur Stevenson, an analyst with Prudential Securities in New York. "The cocoa market is responding to a well-supplied situation," he said. "Stocks remain huge both in this country and in Western Europe. Also, Ghana cocoa purchase figures are running well ahead of last year, indicating that the crop will come in at about year-ago levels." If shipments continue at their current pace, world cocoa demand would exceed supply by a smaller margin than originally thought, Stevenson said. Concern that the economic crisis in the Far East would dampen consumer demand there has also taken a toll on the cocoa market recently, traders said. "What's happening in the Far East is not going to be that bullish for any commodities because consumption should suffer," a New York-based broker said. Technically, the market appeared oversold after falling by more than 12 percent in the last month, but dealers said any correction would likely encounter strong resistance toward the closely watched $1,600 level in March. Support was noted at $1,559 basis the May contract, and at $1,538 in March. The day's volume was estimated at 9,032 lots. 131104 MET jan 98
