Light speculative selling kept the market under pressure for much of the day, but scale-down buying from the processing sector provided support. Benchmark March futures fell $5 a tonne to $1,536. after trading from $1,528 and $1,553. May futures also slid $5, while the back months ended down $4 to up $3. Currency fluctuations also played a role Tuesday, dealers said, as a firmer sterling prompted dealers to sell London cocoa against dollar-denominated New York cocoa. London's benchmark March contract fell 13 stg to 1,011, ending just above a key support level at 1,010 stg. Cocoa prices have fallen sharply by some 12 percent in the past month, pressured a steady flow of cocoa into port in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world's top producers. The financial crisis in Asia has also taken a toll, traders said, raising fears that the region's economic woes will dampen consumer demand. "Apparently, arrivals in the Ivory Coast are strong," one trader said. "Sentiment in the market is really bearish." Technically, support was noted just below today's lows, at $1,524. Traders pegged resistance at $1,559, followed by $1,600. An estimated 7,580 lots changed hands on the day. 141041 MET jan 98
