Benchmark March futures fell $65 per tonne to $1,620, ending toward the bottom of its $1,619-1,656 trading range. One of the leading players in the cocoa trade, Phibro is the holder of physical stocks estimated at around 400,000 tonnes, or more than one-quarter of the world's total consumer stocks. A spokeswoman for Phibro's parent company, Wall Street investment house Salomon Smith Barney, confirmed after the close of trading Monday that the commodities trading division would be restructured to allow the company to focus on its core businesses. No further details were provided. Market participants have speculated for months that Phibro might withdraw from softs commodities, following the announcement in September of its merger with financial services firm Travelers Group Inc. But rumors that Phibro's exit was imminent resurfaced last Friday and continued Monday, sparking fears that Phibro would move to sell off its hefty cocoa inventory. "The market was underpinned all year on ideas on that the available supply of cocoa was much more limited and restricted than actual stocks because it was in strong hands," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "Now the thought is that cocoa is going to be in more ready supply." Ganes added that the Phibro news was only one of several bearish factors to hit the market in the last few days. She noted that arrivals of new-crop cocoa at Ivory Coast ports have picked up speed, and Commitment of Traders figures released late Friday showed an unexpected jump in the speculative long position. According to the latest CFTC figures, speculators were net long 15,046 lots as of December 16, about 50 percent more than what most traders had anticiapted. An estimated 10,104 lots changed hands on the day. 231226 MET dec 97
