Prices fell sharply at the opening, as a downturn in the British pound against the U.S. dollar prompted a round of arbitrage sales in favor of sterling-denominated London cocoa. The New York market recouped some of the lost ground by midday, but a brief bid to the upside ran into heavy opposition at a key technical barrier at $1,615 in March. The market has topped out at that level in three out of four days this week. "You just ran into some chart resistance," one trader said. "There was a little bit of buying once again from the specs, but once we hit the high of $1,615, it was a classic spot for people to do a little bit of selling." Benchmark March futures slumped to $1,598 a tonne by the close, down $16 from Wednesday. The back months also finished $16 lower. Trading volume was light, reaching an estimated 5,027 lots. Otherwise, market participants displayed little reaction to Dutch and U.K. fourth-quarter grind figures released early Thursday. In the Netherlands, the world's leading cocoa processor, grindings rose by 5.94 percent to 103,053 tonnes over the same period a year earlier. The U.K. cocoa grind climbed by one percent to 45,581 tonnes. Germany is slated to release its fourth-grind results either tomorrow or early next week, while the U.S. figures are due out next Friday.
