Benchmark March futures rose $11 a tonne to $1,547, trading from $1,537 to $1,557. Second-position May climbed $12 to $1,584, while the back months finished $9 to $13 higher. Buying linked to the manufacturing sector surfaced early in the day, as the market's recent sharp downturn prompted the trade to cover positions. Some speculative buying was also seen, but resistance was heavy toward the highs. With arrivals continuing at a healthy clip in West Africa, the market had difficulty gathering momentum to tackle key near-term objectives, dealers said. The $1,559-1,560 area was proving especially tough, they said. "It's not a meaningful bounce for the moment," one trader said. "Chart-wise, if we were to hold $1,528 and rally, then it would look fairly impressive, but we may have to test the lows again first."
