Benchmark March futures fell $34 a tonne to $1,564, the lowest since December 1, after trading from $1,560 to $1,589. Second-position May slid $33, to $1,597. Cocoa hovered at moderately weaker levels for much of the day, but speculators stepped up their selling ahead of the close as trade support thinned. Some buying resurfaced as March approached the $1,560 mark, a double-bottom on the charts. Dealers said across-the-board selling of commodity assets in the wake of the Asian financial crisis compounded the weaker tone on cocoa. The CRB-Bridge index of commodites fell Friday to its lowest level since April 1994. Uneasiness related to Phibro Inc's plans to restructure its tropical trading operations also weighed on the market, as dealers remained apprehensive that the trade house would seek to rapidly liquidate its large long holdings. "It's all pointing to an erosion of prices," said one trader. "The market was hoping to have a repeat of the last two sessions, where it rallied, but it wasn't to be." Since mid-December, cocoa prices have fallen by $198, or 11 percent, based on the CSCE March contract. An estimated 9,213 lots were exchanged Friday. 121125 MET jan 98
