Prices turned broadly lower early in the day, sliding through several minor support levels, on the back of persistent speculative selling. But scale-down buying surfaced just above key support levels, helping the market to recapture much of the lost ground. March futures fell $9 a tonne on the day to $1,587, having traded from $1,594 to $1,562. May also eased $9, to $1,621, while the back months were off between $8 and $2. "It ran down a bit, but it hit a vacuum," one broker said. Good trade buying emerged near lows set in early December at $1,559 in March and $1,586 in May, indicating the market may be due for a technical correction. Resistance was noted between $1,615 and $1,629, a chart gap created at Monday's sharply lower opening. CSCE cocoa prices have fallen by nearly 10 percent since mid-December, when a prolonged speculative buying spree took prices to their highest in more than four months. Otherwise, traders displayed little reaction to the latest CFTC Commitment of Traders data, which showed speculators net long 12,252 lots as of December 30. The figures reflected a decline of 2,794 lots in the speculative position from the prior two-week period. An estimated 16,715 lots changed hands on the day. Benchmark March futures fell $34 a tonne to close at $1,596, settling below the closely-watched $1,600 level for the first time in a month. Second-position May fell $31 to $1,630, while the back months closed to $26 to $31 lower. Traders said a downturn in the British pound against the dollar, coupled with a disappointing showing in the London market overnight, sent prices down sharply at the open. "The major reason for the move down in New York was the firmer dollar," one broker said. Hit with a mixture of speculative and trade selling, the market quickly filled a chart gap at $1,612-1,608. Sell stops were activated below that level, pushing the market to the day's lows early on. Today's volume was estimated at 10,844 lots, including up to 5,000 against actuals, traders said. Cocoa prices have fallen by nine percent since mid-December, when a prolonged speculative buying spree took prices to their highest in more than four months. While there have been few concrete fundamentals behind the market's recent slide, traders said the steady pace of Ivorian arrivals and a general uneasiness about plans by leading trade house Phibro Inc to withdraw from the cocoa trade have kept cocoa prices under pressure. Technically, the market faced support in March at $1,559 a tonne, while resistance was noted between $1,615-1,630, a gap created at today's open. 071154 MET jan 98
