Three months metal eased under cash metal sales after failing to sustain an early move that took it to a high of $2,175 per tonne after a strong close on Wednesday. It fell below initial support of $2,150 to end the morning kerb at $2,140 per tonne, down $23 from Wednesday. Much of the focus, however, was on spreads ahead of Monday's third Wednesday pricing for December. Heavy volume was done in tomorrow/next which mainly traded at a $22.50 backwardation. Cash for a day traded at a $20 and $21 backwardation, while cash for two days went at a $42 backwardation. As each day ahead of the December date comes out of the equation, however, the cash/threes backwardation eases and it was at $113/123 compared to around $140 on Wednesday. Dealers say the strong backwardations has been attracting metal into LME warehouses and they expect a stocks rise on Friday between 5,000 and 10,000 tonnes. Aluminium followed copper's lead, popping to a $1,534 high initially but drifting down in the rings and on the kerb. Three months prices ended the kerb at $1,514, down $13 from Wednesday. The market was seen consolidating between $1,510 and $1,541. The other metals held slightly higher levels except nickel which dipped to the lowest since November 19. Nickel hit a low of $6,675 and analysts said battered technicals would probably send prices back down to the November 18 nadir of $6,600. Chartists said a downtrend at $6,860 was seen as important resistance. The last trade was at $6,690, down $20. Far East and call option buying helped lead sustain its recovery after a dive to 13-month lows on Monday and Tuesday. It was well off the $666 low seen early in the week, heading towards resistance at $690. It finished $8 higher at $687. Tin also maintained a firmer stance after a slide early in the week, adding $40 by the midday close to $5,830. Zinc ended the morning quietly firmer at $1,055/56 from $1,049 and alloy was little changed at $1,360/65, versus $1,355/65 on Wednesday. FRANCUSKI METALI - 11. prosinca 1996.
