Copper retreats after early LME rally
LONDON, Nov 12 (Reuter) - Copper stormed past the $2,070
resistance level on Wednesday only to shed gains when longs
liquidated in a choppy morning session, traders said.
Three-months copper closed the morning kerb at the London
Metal Exchange (LME) at $2,048, up $3, after ranging between
$2,083 and $2,045.
Prices rose on early fund shortcovering in pre-market
trading, buoyed by a strong New York close and news of an
earthquake in the south of Peru, a major copper producer. Police
said mines in the area were not damaged.
The rally ran out of steam after a high of $2,083 and
drifted back to a sell stop at $2,075, which triggered a bout of
long liquidation, traders said.
The downside was seen limited, however, with strong support
expected to come in at $2,020 per tonne.
"Copper has been volatile in fairly good volume, although
off its highs it seems to be establishing a new higher range,"
an LME floor trader said.
Nearby spreads eased slightly in thin trading. The
cash-to-threes backwardation was last indicated around $78 after
peaking at $86 earlier.
Traders expected the tightness to re-emerge by the end of
the week against the background of a physically tight market.
Aluminium followed copper lower, although some forward
interest was noted. Three-months aluminium finished the morning
kerb at $1,447, per tonne, versus $1,454.50.
Nickel at one stage moved gently higher on market talk that
Russian authorities had confiscated stocks from producer
Norilsk. However the blip higher was shortlived and nickel ended
slightly lower at $7,190, down $40.
Lead was barely changed at $738, up $1, while zinc lost $4
to settle at $1,060.
Tin finished at $5,985, a small $5 gain, and aluminium alloy
was indicated at $1,305/$1,310, little moved.
