Copper lower, LME jumpy at end morning session
LONDON, Dec 2 (Reuter) - Copper prices eased during Monday
LME morning kerb trading as the market came under pressure from
U.S. selling and slightly softer backwardations, traders said.
Trading was nervous, however, with prices whipping around at
times, reflecting the current uncertainty in the market.
On Tuesday, the market has to contend with latest warehouse
stock data, which may show another increase after Friday's rise,
which was the first since September.
On Wednesday December options will be declared, although as
prices are some way off the highs of last week the likelihood is
fading of the $2,600 strike coming into play.
Prices backtracked from early highs near $2,240, skirting
under $2,220 to trigger some sell-stops, before rallying
slightly to end the kerb at $2,225, down $17 from Friday.
On the spreads, conditions were not so volatile as of late,
with cash/threes easing into a $225 backwardation from $245 on
Friday. Cash/day was showing a $5 premium.
Elsewhere, the metals complex was in a low-key frame of mind
ahead of the U.S. market's post-Thanksgiving re-opening. Prices
largely held stable, before tipping back slightly during the
kerb.
Aluminium was inhibited by some Far Eastern sales and
speculative selling, but largely continued to consolidate after
last week's run-up. Prices finished the morning at an unchanged
$1,529.
Interest was sluggish in both lead and zinc, and prices
remained close to pre-weekend levels. Lead was quoted at
$684/85, against Friday's $686 close, while zinc closed the kerb
at $1,069, a $2 loss.
Tin was content to hold above the $6,100 level, but trade
was confined to a narrow range. The market ended the morning at
$6,105, down just $5 a tonne.
Some light covering aided nickel, which closed the morning
at $6,870, up $50, while alloy was marginally lower, trading at
$1,362.
