Three-months copper ended the morning kerb at $2,206 per tonne, down $2 from Wednesday's late close, after ranging between $2,200 and $2,215 in early trading. The cash to threes backwardation on copper widened about $10 from Wednesday's late levels to around $170, then contracted later in the session to $165/$170. Volumes were thin on the trading floor, traders said. Some of the recent uncertainty and liquidity in the market had disappeared after Wednesday's December options declaration was concluded. But Friday's LME stock data was injecting a note of wariness into the market, traders said, with some predicting inventories would rise again after a long string of drawdowns. Stocks had increased by 1,000 tonnes on Tuesday. "People are nervous of taking positions ahead of the stocks. They're afraid to go short, but they don't want to go long," one trader said. "Copper just doesn't seem realistic anymore and no one wants to trade it unless they have to," added another. Several traders said that copper had arrived in LME warehouses, with 3,000 tonnes reported to have shown up in Long Beach and 1,000 tonnes in Baltimore. Metal was also said to have arrived in Singapore. The other metals were also quiet, easing slightly or fluctuating within tight price ranges. Aluminium followed copper lower in the morning kerb, edging below $1,530 to end the kerb at $1,527, down $10. Nickel eased back below $6,900 to $6,880. Zinc was barely changed at $1,068, and lead was up $2 at $691. Tin was last bid down $15 at $6,100. Aluminium alloy was last at $1,365/67. FRANCUSKI METALI - 04. prosinca 1996.
