Copper higher on LME, Dec borrowing seen
LONDON, Dec 11 (Reuter) - Copper prices built on early
short-covering during Wednesday's official rings on the LME,
with the market defended around the $2,150 level, ahead of the
"third Wednesday" December date.
Traders said interest in December dates was keen three
business days ahead of the December date pricing, with cash to
December at a $50/51 backwardation and cash over the weekend
trading at $14. Dec 17/18 traded at $16 backwardation also.
News the Dutch Bureau of Statistics admitted supplying
flawed data on copper flows through Rotterdam, which cleared up
the puzzle of substantial hidden stocks, was a background
factor.
Traders said the market had generally been sceptical that a
substantial amount of copper could be stored undetected in the
Netherlands, so incorrect data had always been the likeliest
explanation.
Business was mostly routine, including on the spreads, and
final three months trade on the kerb was at $2,156, up $20 a
tonne from Tuesday.
Elsewhere, the aluminium market attracted good buying on
dips, with support projected between $1,500 and $1,510. Last
morning business was at $1,512, a $8.50 gain.
Lead staged a recovery from recent 13-month lows, albeit in
sluggish trading with the advance faltering at $680. Prices
finished the kerb at $679, up $7 from Tuesday.
Tin also mounted a mini-rally, having plunged to 18-month
lows this week, and cleared $5,800 to conclude the kerb at
$5,810, up $40.
Nickel encountered liquidation around $6,800, and closed a
subdued session at $6,780, down $20 from yesterday. Zinc was
equally quiet, and after edging up faltered at $1,050. Last
morning business was still $3 higher at $1,048.
The alloy market was indicated at a steady $1,358/60 a
tonne.
