LME quiet up to midsession, copper consolidates
LONDON, Nov 27 (Reuter) - Trading in base metals remained
mainly subdued up to Tuesday's midsession recess following
recent volatile activity in the copper market.
However, a late flurry of covering in copper helped to lift
the other base metals from their lows.
"It seems to be coming out of New York," one trader said
referring to the covering.
Comex will be closed on Thursday and Friday for
Thanksgiving.
Market operators expect conditions to turn choppy in copper
soon as the sensitive December 16/18 dates approach. This could
could impact on the forward market.
Trading in copper continued to be dominated by nearby
spreads, though they had looked to have calmed considerably
after Tuesday's wide swings.
The cash to three months backwardation was last at $250,
after earlier dipping towards $230.
Last three months business was at $2,246 a tonne, against
Tuesday's LME kerb close of $2,258. The market ranged between
$2,235 and $2,258.
LME stocks are likely to hold the key to copper's next
direction, traders said.
Several traders suggest inventories will rise over the
coming weeks.
Elsewhere, aluminium drifted back from a high of $1,556 in
thin volume.
Traders said aluminium is looking friendly on the upside,
against the backdrop of uptrending charts, consumer covering and
recent declines in LME stocks.
Last business was at $1,535.50, up 50 cents.
Lead remained quiet but ended the morning $11 lower at $704.
Zinc moved $1 lower to $1,083, while nickel was last at
$7,030, down $35.
Tin settled at $6,150, against $6,160.
Alloy unchanged at $1,385, versus $1,375/80.
