Traders said much of day's activity focused on the nearby switch, as operators began to roll spot March into second-month May ahead of March's delivery period February 14. March futures ended $8 a tonne lower, at $1,308, after ranging between $1,314 and $1,303. Second-position May fell $14, to $1,334, while the rest closed $9 to $12 weaker. The day's volume reached only an estimated 4,713 lots. The benchmark March contract managed to once again survive a test of key resistance at $1,300 a tonne, as downward momentum slowed and light manufacturer buying emerged toward the lows, traders said. Technically, traders said March would need to hold above $1,292-1,294 to avoid retesting the contract low of $1,259 set last week. To the upside, resistance was noted toward today's highs at $1,314-1,316 and then at $1,323-1,327. In fundamental news, the Ghana Cocoa Board said Wednesday the country's cocoa purchases in the 13th week of the 1996/97 season ending January 9 were 16,364 tonnes compared with 8,950 tonnes in the week ending January 11, 1996. Cumulative purchases were 229,754 tonnes versus 287,266 tonnes in the same year-ago period which corresponded with the 14th week. While the rate of arrivals indicated the 1996/97 West African crop would likely come in below last season's huge harvest, some traders said there appeared to sufficent supplies to cover needs. 301130 MET jan 97
