Shortcovering by speculators accounted for much of the day's gains as the market proceeded to correct from a severely oversold condition, traders said. Benchmark March futures finished up $16 at $1,324 a tonne after ranging between $1,326 and $1,295. Second-position May ended $18 higher at $1,357, while the rest rose $15 to $20. Cocoa got off to a shaky start Monday, opening a bit higher but quickly slipping after prices failed to make the preopening call of up $10. Traders said a firm dollar against Sterling weighed on the market, dealers said, as arbitrage sold more expensive dollar-denominated futures. But after sinking below the $1,300 level, traders said the selling began to disippate and speculators moved to resume Friday's shortcovering rally. Technically, traders were encouraged by the market's recovery from lows. They said the March contract would face resistance at $1,335, but a close above that level could spark more short-covering as well as fresh buying interest. On the downside, support was seen at $1,280. In fundamental news, General Cocoa said total cumulative Ivory Coast arrivals were "guesstimated" at some 670,000 tonnes through Jan 18, compared with an estimated 802,000 tonnes at the same time last year. The day's volume reached an estimated 10,956 lots. 281022 MET jan 97
