"We are seeing some bottom picking today and there is some interest in the March/July switch," one trader said. "But it is quiet." At 1239 EST, March futures were down $1 a tonne, at $1,361, ranging from $1,368 to $1,361. May was $2 firmer at $1,388, while the rest were $3 higher to $1 lower. Technically, near-term support was seen at $1,358-$1,355 in the March contract, while resistance was pegged at $1,375-$1,378, a gap on the charts. Traders downplayed an crop estimate by a UK analyst, which pegged the Ivory Coast's cocoa total output at 990,000 tonnes in the current 1996/97 season (October/September).
