Taking its cue from London, New York cocoa gapped lower at the opening, and speculative selling continued to put pressure on the market for the rest of the day. Scale-down buying on the part of manufacturers helped to counter-balance the selling, but a late assault by speculators drove the March contract down to a key chart target at $1,579. Turnover was fairly thin for the second day in a row, however, totaling an estimated 5,819 lots by the close. Bellwether March futures fell $15 per tonne to $1,580, ending near the bottom of the day's $1,592-1,579 range. Spot December, which had only 711 lots open interest remaining three weeks before its expiry, eased $11 to close at $1,553. With few new developments to provide impetus, traders looked for the market to trade in thin volume leading up to the four-day holiday break next week. The CSCE will be closed on Thursday, November 27, and Friday, November 28, for the U.S. Thanksgiving Day holiday. 241042 MET nov 97
