In a carbon copy of Tuesday's session, the active March contract showed early weakness on currency-related selling as the British pound continued its decline. But by the end of the sessions, the commission houses and small speculative traders took back their early losses. March cocoa ended at $1,582 a tonne, up $3 from Tuesday's close, trading between $1,571 and $1,584 a tonne. Spot December ended at $1,552 a tonne, up $8. "Mostly, we saw the spec coming in and evening their positions before the long weekend," one floor trader said. Despite early bottom-picking by the manufacturers, the trade were working from the sell side of the market, with origin selling contributing the the weakness early in the session, traders said. Estimated volumes were 2,947 lots. The British pound was at $1.6725 at 1434 EST, off from $1.6762 Tuesday, but the currency has been in a downtrend for the last three weeks, contributing to the selling pressure in the New York dollar-denominated contract. 271116 MET nov 97
