The market hit a low of $1,565 a tonne in the March contract, the lowest since August 18, as weakness in sterling against the U.S. dollar prompted early fund buying. But by the end of the session, trade buying had overwhelmed the market, leading to the stronger close. March cocoa ended at $1,579 a tonne, up $5 from Monday's close, trading between $1,565 and $1,581 a tonne. Spot December ended at $1,544 a tonne, down $3. "The dollar came in stronger, which led to some fund selling in New York," said one commission house broker. "But some manufactuers were scale-down buyers at the bottom of the range looking for bargains. And eventually, the funds gave up on it." From a technical standpoint, the new low and a higher settlement would signal a reversal for cocoa after a week and a half of steadily falling prices. But with estimated volumes at a paltry 3,718 lots and strong crop yields expected from the Ivory Coast, bearish sentiment prevails. "Volumes were absolutely miserable," another trader said. "We'll probably see some short covering rallies here and there. But the general trend is bearish." "Seasonally, this is the fundamentally bearish-to-neutral time of year for cocoa," the commission-house broker said. "There's plenty of cocoa coming in from the Ivory Coast. The mood is one of profit-taking." 261107 MET nov 97
