A brief spate of speculative buying propped prices above unchanged in the morning, but the upswing stalled $4 below yesterday's high of $1,612. The market then idled near unchanged for much of the day, until a light round of speculative liquidation pushed cocoa to the lows at the close. The closely watched March contract fell $9 to $1,595, near the day's low of $1,594. Spot December, which had only 744 lots open interest remaining at the start of today's session, eased $7 to $1,564. Volume was unusually light, at an estimated 2,053 lots. Technically, the late selloff positioned the March contract for the $1,587 level, a three-month low set on Tuesday. To the upside, $1,612 was seen as a major near-term hurdle. With little fresh fundamental input to drive the market, however, traders said the market could linger near the $1,600 mark until participants return from the four-day Thanksgiving holiday break at the end of next week.
