Prices rallied at the opening, aided by a sharp rise on the British pound against the U.S. dollar. Sterling surged to a four-month high overnight after the Bank of England hiked interest rates by 1/4 point. The market made several attempts to work its way higher, but producer selling prevented the most-active March contract from challenging chart resistance, traders said, noting a key objective at $1,668-1,673. "The uptrend wasn't sustainable because you had origin price-fixing ahead of (December's) first notice day," said one trader. Selling pressure on the nearby switches also weighed on the market, as participants sought to roll longs forward before December goes into delivery period next Friday. March futures fell $7 to finish at $1,647 a tonne, after trading from $1,640 to $1,667. Spot December yielded $8 to close at $1,604, posting trades from $1,599 to $1,625. Traders said tomorrow's expiry of December options could put further pressure on the market, as December futures gravitate toward $1,600, a well-bid strike price. The day's volume was estimated at 11,350 lots.
