The market swung higher at the opening, bolstered by the news that no cocoa had been tendered against the spot December contract for the first day of its month-long delivery period. But the buying momentum fizzled out early in the day, capping the rally at $1,668 basis March, a minor resistance point. Most-active March fell $8 per tonne to close at $1,652, toward the bottom of the day's $1,668-1,651 trading range. December eased $4 to $1,610, while the outer months finished down between $6 and $8. In the last few days, talk circulated that as many as 2,000 notices would be issued against December at the start of the delivery period. While a rash of notices could still emerge in the next few days, traders said the absence of notices suggested the contract was heading for an unremarkable expiry. "If the December-March switch starts tightening in, you'll probably see a tender, but if it widens out, you'll see some profit-taking on the short side," said one broker. "(But) it's going to be non-event at the end of the day." December's open interest fell by a steep 4,383 lots on Wednesday, paring the remaining open position to 3,481 lots. Technically, March faced a major upside objective at around $1,690, while support was noted at $1,640, followed by $1,604-1,602. An estimated 4,599 lots were traded on the day.
