Crude palm oil prices were carried higher on Monday morning on a wave of sentiment from Asia following news that Indonesia was seeking to limit exports of crude and refined palm oil to 1.21 mln tonnes between November 1997 and March 1998. However, European traders did not view the news as bullish. "The figures...are about in line with normal Indonesian exports during the November to March period and this is what is hanging the market up because no one can figure what they, Indonesia, are getting at," said one trader. Some traders said any impact would be limited because "...the Indonesians are covering themselves ahead of the year-end holidays." Others said the impact would more than likely be limited to futures markets while the cash market would hardly move, a view which seemed to be reflected in European prices. Traders said the lower Chicago opening was another factor causing prices to ease. "The market overreacted this morning and now Chicago has come in lower there seems little to hold prices at current levels," said another trader. Traders said all other news over the weekend had been bearish and in the longer term would have more of an impact on the market. On Saturday the Malaysian Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority (PORLA) released its data for end-October. PORLA said local crude palm oil output fell 2.66 percent to 912,284 tonnes in October from 937,222 in September and against 884,887 in October 1996. October palm oil exports were 618,989 tonnes against 739,777 in September and 728,393 in October 1996, it said. Malaysia's palm oil stocks rose 13.25 percent to 1.03 million tonnes at end-October from 906,570 tonnes at end-September and compared with 954,841 at end-October 1996, PORLA added. On Monday Malaysian cargo surveyor Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) Malaysia estimated Malaysia's palm oil exports for Nov 1-15 at 284,065 tonnes against 353,123 for October 1-15. At the close crude palm oil cif Europe was $5 up against $7.50 higher during the morning. Refined palm oil offers finish with RBD palm oil $2.50 up while olein was $2.50 with no further palm oil business reported during the afternoon. Lauric oils were neglected and closed with coconut oil $2.50 down while palmkernel oil was $5 up. Traders said there was a "stand-off" on the soft oil market with tight supplies keeping prices firm, but buyers increasingly reluctant to pay the higher levels. Dutch soy oil closed 2.50 to one guilder up while rape oil finished with gains of three to 0.50 guilders. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 181106 MET nov 97
