Scottish carpet wools met with good demand at a recent Bradford auction, but since the next auction is not scheduled until the second week of January those with needs to cover will have to move in now, they added. The carpet sector was keeping busy, with New Zealand wools proving particularly cheap. Business has been placed well forward, with manufacturers taking full advantage of the buying opportunity offered by sterling strength. The combing sector in the UK and in Europe in general was also busy, with capacity down after the earlier recession. Apart from that, new business was often difficult, with exporting extremely difficult and import competition a growing threat. 141109 MET nov 97
