Merino fleece was dearer, with 19/26 microns up to one percent dearer, 20/21/23/25m 0.5 percent dearer and 22/24m slightly dearer, while merino skirtings were one percent up. In crossbreds, 27/28m were 0.5 percent dearer, 29/31m unchanged and 31m slightly cheaper. In cardings, lambs were up to two percent cheaper, locks up to one percent dearer and crutchings slightly dearer. WI said Japanese interests including China and Taiwan were principal traders with support from Western Europe. Of the 21,041 bales offered, 3.4 percent were passed in. In early Fremantle trading, merino fleece of 20/21/22m was generally unchanged, 23/24m slightly cheaper and 25m one percent dearer. Orders still on the books are said to be going out well, although there was little sign of any follow on business, traders said. Home market conditions are relatively better with new trade coming through, but it is doing so only slowly and many in the trade are worried about the level of clothing sales recently. Sterling's impact is also felt through imports at much more competitive prices than applied a year ago. 041108 MET nov 97
