Merino fleece were mixed, with 19/21/22 microns slightly cheaper, 20/23/24m slightly dearer and 25/26m one percent dearer. Merino skirtings of 19m were slightly dearer and 20/21m generally unchanged. In crossbreds, 27/28m were 0.5 percent dearer, 29m two percent dearer, 30m 2.5 percent dearer and 31m slightly dearer. In cardings, lambs were slightly dearer, locks up to one percent dearer and crutchings unchanged. WI said there was general competition with Western Europe and Japan the principal operators. Of the 24,879 bales offered, 11.9 percent were passed in. The lower prices did attract some buying interest but there was limited business, due to increasing wider uncertainties caused by economic problems in the Far East and the sharp fall in stock markets. The gloomy scenario was added to by closures and redundancies in some spinning firms. But the currency factor could be offset by higher prices being paid at this week's Australian sales, traders said. 281249 MET oct 97
