Merino fleece was cheaper, with 19/22/25/26 microns up to one percent cheaper, 20m 0.5 percent cheaper, 21m slightly cheaper, and 23/24m two percent cheaper, while merino skirtings were generally unchanged. In crossbreds, 27/31m were unchanged, with 28/29/30m slightly dearer. In cardings, lambs were unchanged, locks up to one percent dearer and crutchings slightly cheaper. WI said Japanese interests including China and Western Europe were principal traders with good support from most sectors of the trade. Of the 29,537 bales offered, 12.2 percent were passed in. Orders still on the books are said to be going out well, although there was little sign of any follow on business, traders said. Home market conditions are relatively better with new trade coming through, but it is doing so only slowly and many in the trade are worried about the level of clothing sales recently. Sterling's impact is also felt through imports at much more competitive prices than applied a year ago. 051023 MET nov 97
