Merino fleece of 19/20 microns was slightly cheaper, 21/23/24m slightly dearer, 22m 0.5 percent dearer, 25m unchanged and 26m slightly cheaper while merino skirtings were fully firm. In crossbreds, 27/28/29m were 0.5 percent cheaper, 30m one percent cheaper and 31m unchanged. In cardings, lambs were generally unchanged, locks up to one percent cheaper and crutchings unchanged. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal operators with good support from Western Europe and most sectors of the trade. Of the 23,996 bales offered, 8.0 percent were passed in. In early Fremantle trading, merino fleece of 20/22m was fully firm, 21/24/25m one percent cheaper and 23m unchanged. This has helped to keep hopes of better buying interest alive, even on the export side where pressure from sterling strength has resulted in sporadic hand to mouth business, they added. However, the market remained generally worried that exports would be even more difficult with sterling stronger again after the latest UK interest rate rise, especially as this will make imports cheaper than supplies from the UK.
