Merino fleece was mostly cheaper, with 19/21/22/23 microns 0.5 percent cheaper, 20m slightly dearer and 24/25/26m slightly cheaper. In merino skirtings, 19/22m were slightly cheaper and 20/21m generally unchanged. In crossbreds, 27/31m were unchanged, 28/30m slightly dearer and 29m 0.5 percent cheaper. In cardings, lambs were slightly cheaper, locks one percent dearer and crutchings unchanged. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal traders with good support from Western Europe and most sectors of the trade. Of the 26,339 bales offered, 9.2 percent were passed in. In early Fremantle trade, merino fleece was one to three percent cheaper with an early pass-in rate of 22 percent. Orders still on the books are said to be going out well, although there was little sign of any follow on business, traders said. Home market conditions are relatively better with new trade coming through, but it is doing so only slowly and many in the trade are worried about the level of clothing sales recently. Sterling's impact is also felt through imports at much more competitive prices than applied a year ago. 061111 MET nov 97
