Merino fleece of 19/20/21/25 microns was slightly dearer, 22m slightly cheaper, 23/24m 0.5 percent dearer and 26m unchanged. Merino skirtings of 19m were slightly dearer with 20/21m firm. In crossbreds, 27/30m were slightly dearer, 28m unchanged and 29/31m 0.5 percent dearer. In cardings, merino lambs were unchanged, with crossbred lambs 1.5 percent dearer, locks generally unchanged and crutchings firm. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal operators with good support from Western Europe and most sectors of the trade. Of the 22,551 bales offered, 7.4 percent were passed in. This has helped to keep hopes of better buying interest alive, even on the export side where pressure from sterling strength has resulted in sporadic hand to mouth business, they added. However, the market remained generally worried that exports would be even more difficult with sterling stronger again after the latest UK interest rate rise, especially as this will make imports cheaper than supplies from the UK.
