Traders said the market benefitted from views that the recent selloff had been overdone, along with positive chart signals after filling a key downside gap on Tuesday. "The market was oversold, and we needed a correction to the upside," one broker said. After a brief downturn at the session opening, cocoa prices edged back into the plus column on the back of steady speculative buying. The market held its ground for the remainder of the day, though both speculative and industry-linked selling blocked several bids to test resistance at $1,660 (basis January). March futures rose $24 per tonne to close at $1,654, near the top of the day's $1,624-1,656 range. Spot December, which goes into notice period at the end of next week, rose $23 to $1,612. Dealers said the closure on Tuesday of a chart gap stretching from $1,585 to $1,570 on the December contract signaled to some operators that the market may have established a temporary bottom. What is more, speculators are believed to have sharply reduced their net long position over the last few weeks, leading some participants to believe that the funds have renewed capacity to take on fresh longs. "The market was really battered down over the last few weeks, and people are now saying the specs have cleaned out most of their position," another trader said. The day's volume was estimated at 16,355 lots. 061107 MET nov 97
