Keen interest was also noted on the nearby switch, as traders sought to relinquish spot positions ahead of December's first notice day next Friday. "There was a tremendous amout of switches," said one broker, who estimated that as many as 7,000 December-March spread trades were executed in today's session. March futures, which have taken over the lead from December in terms of open interest, climbed $12 a tonne to finish at $1,630, after trading from $1,604 to $1,635. The December contract rose $11 to $1,589, up from an early low of $1,563. Prices headed lower at the opening on the back of a weaker performance in London overnight, but buying interest resurfaced after March managed to hold above support at $1,602. Continued strength on sterling against the U.S. dollar also aided New York cocoa prices, traders said. With December's delivery period only a week away, traders said they expected position adjustments to dominate market discussions for the time being. December's open interest shrank by a hefty 4,582 lots during Monday's session, to 24,993 lots, and dealers said another 5,000 lots could have been erased from the total today. In the longer term, price direction would hinge in large part on the progress of crop arrivals in Ivory Coast, the world's top cocoa grower. Early-season arrivals have been strong, contributing to the futures market's sharp downturn earlier this month. Volume totaled an estimated 21,502 lots. 051019 MET nov 97
