"You have only got to look at the ringgit, which is weak again against the dollar, to see what is going to happen next week," said one trader. Palm oil prices were unchanged at the close of business in Europe, but currency factors, smog and El Nino are all expected to combine again to drive the market higher. "The effect of the weak ringgit is diluted to some extent on the European market because we trade in dollars, but the other two factors alone will keep the market on the boil," said another trader. Earlier volatile trading on the Kuala Lumpur Commodity Exchange subdued the palm oil sector with traders expressing disappointment that the KLCE did not test the extended 75 ringgit limit in palm oil futures. The KLCE closed 10 ringgit down to 17 up after a choppy session. "The market has got overheated and we may see a setback, but if it comes it will be short lived," said another trader. The Indonesian Agriculture Minister Syarifuddin Baharsyah said on Friday he expected bush fires to affect the country's palm oil output. Indonesian crude palm oil production had been projected to rise to 5.2 million to 5.3 million tonnes in 1997, against 4.5 million last year, but it is likely this will have to be adjusted. Coconut oil eased slightly towards the close with only light dealer trading reported. However, traders said the market remained bullish. "The market is very bullish with people getting more concerned as the smog spreads across to the Philippines, on top of the El Nino worries," said one. Soft oils were lower mainly due to the easier dollar against the guilder with news that China has increased its duty on quota soy oil and harvest pressure in the U.S. adding to the bearish sentiment. China said it would increase its import duty on soy oil within its annual quota to 20 percent against 13 percent. At the close of business Dutch soy oil was unchanged to 1.50 guilders lower after Oct traded at 113.50 and Feb/Apr at 109.25 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil was 1.25 to 0.50 guilders lower after Nov/Jan fetched 113.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Palm oil closed unchanged across the board with no further business reported. In lauric oils coconut oil was $5 up to unchanged after Dec/Jan traded at $680 and $675, Jan/Feb at $685 and Feb/Mar at $690 a tonne cif.
