Palm stearin and coconut oil prices soared on expectations of a ban by the European Union (EU) on imports of tallow from the U.S. starting January 1, 1998 owing to concerns over BSE. EU scientists on Thursday said the U.S. had probably been free of BSE in the past but there was no guarantee it would remain so. The U.S. is very concerned over the ban which it says has no scientific basis and could affect billions of dollars worth of exports to Europe. Stearin prices in Europe jumped $15 a tonne on Friday morning in active trading and had gained a further $15 by the close of business, but some traders felt the ban was not the only reason. "The ban has been talked about for some time now and I think the surge in prices can also be out down to people waking up to the fact that stearin, which is a natural replacement for tallow, is at quite a discount. On Thursday tallow was offered in Europe at $520 to $525 a tonne while stearin was $360 to $365 a tonne fob Malaysian ports. Traders said based on these prices the cif price for stearin in Europe would come out at around $400 to $405 a tonne. "Even when you add on taxes and any other bits you can think of, stearin is still a good buy against tallow," said a trader. Traders said the sudden jump in prices coupled with the weak Malaysian ringgit and news of an Indian tender "smoked out some very heavy shorts." The firm stearin market set off a chain reaction pushing palm olein higher which in turn boosted crude palm oil. Coconut oil, which like stearin, can be used in cosmetics and soap tracked the rise in prices and was also actively traded. "The market is getting very over-heated and I would not be surprised if we saw a correction next week," said one trader. India's State Trading Corporation (STC) was seeking two or three parcels of palm olein for shipment between October 5-20. "First reports said the STC was seeking 6,000 to 12,000 tonnes, now it seems they may be after a third parcel," said a trader. The result of the tender was expected on Friday or Saturday, but traders said after the sudden surge in prices they would not be surprised if India passed at the tender. "We have not heard anything official, but we think the STC passed," said one. Soft oils also closed steady taking their lead from Chicago soy oil futures which opened higher on the back of the rally in tropical prices in Asia and Europe. At the close Dutch soy oil was 0.50 to 0.25 guilders up after Oct traded at 122.50 guilders while rape oil was 1.25 guilders higher to unchanged after Nov/Jan fetched 112 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $12.50 up after Sep traded at $530, Oct at $525, $535, and $537.50 and Oct/Dec at $530 a tonne cif. Olein closed $10 while RBD palm oil was $7.50 higher with no further business reported. Palm stearin closed $30 a tonne higher after Oct traded at $380, Nov $370, Nov/Dec $385 and $395, Dec from $370 up to $380 and Jan/Mar from $372.50 upto $385 a tonne cif. Coconut oil finished $25 to $22.50 higher after Oct/Nov traded at $630, Nov/Dec at $635 and $642.50, Dec/Jan from $630 upto $652.50 and Jan/Feb at $600 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil closed with offers $25 to $5 higher after Nov/Dec traded at $622.50 and $625 a tonne cif. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 221012 MET sep 97
