Active trading developed mainly between dealers although some consumer interest was seen. "Consumers managed to get a few odd loads, but on the whole they could not get on," said one trader. Palm oil also turned a little softer during the afternoon mainly on feelings that the market is getting over done. "People would like to consolidate around these levels and maybe next week we can get back to fundamentals," said another trader. Prices have been rising steadily on the back of a weak ringgit with Monday's data from PORLA and SGS giving the market a further boost. The sharp increase in Malaysian have not always been reflected in Europe where palm oil is traded in dollars. "There are still a few bullish factors about, with people expecting India State Trading Corporation (STC) to be in the market and there is some nervousness emerging owing to the smoke haze hanging over Malaysian," said one trader. Bush fires triggered by land clearing in parts of Indonesia have blanketed some areas of Indonesia and neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore in a smoke haze which is causing health problems for the local population and traders fear could disrupt transport. "We are hearing the situation is very bad in Kuala Lumpur today and there is some concern that inland and sea-borne transport could be disrupted due to low visibility," a trader said. Traders said they thought that the STC may have bought all they need for now while others said they may be in the market on Thursday or Friday. Some traders said the STC bought a total of 18,000 tonnes palm olein at last Friday's tender. "The result of the tender has been kept very quiet but it seems they did buy," said one trader. The STC is reported to have bought 12,000 tonnes of olein at $548.50 a tonne c and f for Sep 25/Oct 5 shipment and an additional parcel at $545.50 a tonne for Oct 1/15 shipment. Traders were unable to give any details on the sellers. Soft oils eased during the afternoon as fear over frost in the U.S. Midwest diminished and harvest pressure mounted. At the close Dutch soy oil was 1.25 to two guilders up after Nov/Jan traded at 109.50 guilders, rape oil was one guilders higher with business reported in Nov/Jan at 110 and 110.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Crude palm oil cif Europe finished with unchanged sellers after Oct traded at $517.50, Nov/Dec at $512.50 and Jan/Mar at $522.50 a tonne cif. RBD palm oil closed $5 up while olein was unchanged with no further business reported. Coconut oil closed $15 to $2.50 lower after Oct/Nov traded at $610, Nov/Dec at $620, Dec/Jan at $630, $627.50 and $625 and Jan/Feb at $642.50, $640 and $635 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil closed unchanged in a tradeless market. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 181039 MET sep 97
