However, traders said the actual tonnage traded was nothing special. "We saw dealers on both sides of the market with some consumer buying," said one trader. Others said a few more sellers had come out during the afternoon and shorts saw their chance of taking some cover. Palm oil was again dominated by currency and export data. Prices were hit by lower than expected exports and a rebound in the ringgit, traders said. Figures released by Malaysian cargo surveyor SGS put local palm oil exports at 414,507 tonnes during Aug 1-20, against 444,956 tonnes during the same period in July. Malaysian traders had been expecting figures of 450,000 to 470,000 tonnes. "The export figures and the ringgit gave the market a bit of a knock this morning, but nothing dramatic," said one trader. News that Indonesia's industry and traded ministry had told palm olein producers not to raise the price of cooking oil on the domestic market had no impact on palm oil prices. In the soft oil sector a slightly higher dollar and talk of lower oil content in the U.S. soybean crop supported prices. "The market took some support from the reports of lower oil content, but the U.S. has a very large crop this year and local mills will be working flat out to meet demand for soymeal. "This means that, for the time being anyway, soyoil will be just a by-product and there will be plenty of it. What happens early next year is another story," a trader said. However, by the close lower Chicago futures trimmed early gains and soy oil finished 0.50 to 0.25 guilders up while rape oil was 0.50 guilders lower to 0.50 guilders higher after Feb/Apr traded at 108 guilders per 100 kg fob ex-mill. Coconut oil finished $12.50 to $10 up after Sep/Oct traded at $560.00 and $562.50, Oct/Nov from $560 up to $570, Nov/Dec at $565 and Dec/Jan from $567.50 up to $572.50 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil finished $5 down to $2.50 up. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $7.50 to $2.50 down while products were unchanged to $7.50 lower.
