Active December fell $10 per tonne on the day, to $1,553, after ranging from $1,568 to $1,540. Spot September ended $8 lower, at $1,535, while the back months closed down $7 to $9. Cocoa prices headed higher at the opening, as speculators followed through on Monday's rally after gains in London overnight, traders said. But trade selling toward the highs capped gains and prevented a test of key chart resistance in the December contract at $1,570, prompting speculators to take profits, dealers said. "It failed at technical resistance at $1,570 and some of the guys who bought it on Monday's run-up sold it," said one dealer. Some dealers were disheartened by the market's failure to follow-through on Monday's rally and said prices could continue to come under pressure. On the charts, traders pegged December support at today's low of $1,540, followed by $1,533. Resistance was still seen at $1,570, with the next level seen at $1,587-$1,590. Fundamentally, light rain fell in southern Ivorian cocoa areas this week, favoring the 1997/98 crop prospects after a dry start to August. Crop analysts said occasional rainfall into September should confirm a large main crop from October despite the possibility of dry weather later this year from El Nino weather patterns already affecting other parts of the world. The International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) said it would meet with weather experts on September 10 to discuss the effects of El Nino on cocoa producing countries. Volume reached an estimated 6,926 lots. 201108 MET aug 97
