"There was no fresh fundamental news," said one trader. "Basically the rally was a reaction to first notice, the CFTC report and technicals. "Plus, origin selling is minimal," he added. Active December jumped $51 per tonne -- or more than three percent -- on the day, to $1,563, after ranging from $1,569 to $1,528. Spot September, which entered delivery period today, soared $57, to settle at $1,543, a one-month high on the continuous weekly chart. The back months finished up $39 to $44. Cocoa prices gapped higher at the opening on local short-covering after exchange data showed a total of only 10 delivery notices had been issued against September, traders said. "First notice day came and only 10 notices were issued," said a trader. "It was way below expectations of the market and heavy short-covering of September followed." The market was also given a boost by the latest CFTC Commitment of Traders report, which showed speculators (non-commercials and nonreportables) were net long 12,081 lots as of August 12. The decline in the speculative net long position was expected, but traders said the data showed the speculative position was small relative to total open interest and that speculators could build more long positions. "The CFTC showed there's more room for specs to get long in this market," said another trader. "They could take on another 20,000 lots net long." Technically, traders said upward momentum took off after December breezed through a double top on the charts at $1,532, and then $1,550, touching off buy-stops. "Once it broke $1,550, it was crazy," said the trader. "There was no selling around until it got above $1,560. It was all technical." In the backround, traders said continued talk that an El Nino weather pattern may adversely affect cocoa crops in southeastern Asia and may also impact West Africa harvests underpinned sentiment. Traders said the London market should come in 12-13 stg higher on Tuesday following New York's run-up. If London makes it due, they expected CSCE cocoa to rack up further gains. On the charts, traders said December faced resistance at $1,570, with the next level seen at $1,587-$1,590. On the downside, support was seen near $1,550, followed by $1,543. Volume reached an estimated 9,524 lots. 190950 MET aug 97
