"There was a lot of position rolling in September," said one trader. "I expect we'll see a big drop in September open interest." September, which had a total open interest 7,164 lots as of Thursday, rose $1 a tonne, to settle at $1,486. Active December closed $4 weaker, at $1,512, after ranging from $1,531 to $1,510. The back months finished unchanged to down $2. Cocoa prices headed higher in early going, buoyed by fund buying of the September/December switch and currency-related buying, traders said. Weakness in the U.S. dollar against sterling and other European currencies inspired some arbitrage buying of cheaper New York cocoa futures.. But dealers said December's inability to breach Wednesday's and Thursday's high of $1,532 prompted disappointed locals to sell. Dealers said trading of September/December switches accounted for a good portion of the 11,073-lot volume today. September/December ended at $26 compared with $31 at the close on Thursday. On the charts, traders said December continued to face resistance at $1,532, with the next level seen at $1,543-$1,54. On the downside, support was seen near $1,510. Refco In analyst Ann Prendergast said although the market appeared to be weak technically, worries that an El Nino weather pattern could adversely affect cocoa crops in Indonesia and Malaysia should underpin the market. "El Nino fears will support prices," she said. "Because of the southeast Asian situation, I think December will hold above $1,490. Traders await the bi-weekly CFTC Commitment fo Traders report due late on Friday. They expect the data to show a decrease in speculative (non-commercial and nonreportable) net long positions. 181022 MET aug 97
