Active December rose $12 a tonne on the day, to $1,527, after ranging narrowly from $1,532 to $1,520. Spot September ended $7 firmer, at $1,499, while the back months gained $13 to $18. September/December ended at $28 compared with $23 at the close on Monday. Cocoa prices headed higher from the outset, in line with pre-opening expectations, as the market recovered from Tuesday's weak close. Traders said light commission house buying nudged December through chart resistance at $1,525, prompting locals to cover their short positions. They said scale-up selling by the trade capped gains and prevented the benchmark December contract from testing the next level of resistance at $1,535. Traders noted a slowdown today in activity on the September/December switch. With only three sessions to go before first notice day. September open interest stood at 10,907 lots as of Tuesday, down 4,526 lots from the previous session. On the charts, traders said December continued to face resistance at $1,535, with the next level seen at $1,543-$1,545. On the downside, support was seen near $1,520. Fundamentally, traders await the next round of crop reports to better gauge the size of the 1997/98 main-crop from top-producer Ivory Coast. An industry analyst said on Tuesday that the Ivorian main-crop could reach as high as 1.1 million tonnes depending on the weather over the next four to five weeks. He pegged the 1996/97 main-crop at 1.01 million tonnes. Volume was thin, at an estimated 4,559 lots. 141041 MET aug 97
